Dallas, TX – Texans Can Academies Pleasant Grove, under the leadership of Principal Tina Shaw, is taking a proactive approach to address its students' Social Emotional Learning (SEL) needs through the continued Advisory initiative. Every week, students across the state engage in mini-advisory lessons designed to foster personal growth, emotional well-being, and academic success.
TCA Pleasant Grove students have been empowered every Monday. Ms. Melinda Bryant led her students in a restorative circle activity where they shared their voices in a safe, supportive environment, creating impactful anchor charts and making powerful statements such as:
“If you can attract failure, then you can attract success.”
“Don’t judge someone based on what they accomplish but what they went through to get there.”
“I promise myself to graduate from high school and make something of myself.”
Principal Tina Shaw emphasized the importance of creating this space, saying, "Advisory is our Miracle Monday. Our students experience real life outside of school and every day they are here. I remind them they are miracles and have a purpose. "
The Advisory initiative reflects the growing importance of SEL in education, focusing on five key components:
Self-awareness
Self-management
Social awareness
Relationship skills
Responsible decision-making
School community/safety
These components work together to provide students with tools for improving their academic performance, well-being, and long-term success. Research shows that SEL can contribute to positive life outcomes, better mental wellness, decreased problem behavior, and stronger relationships. Students who develop SEL skills are more likely to make responsible decisions, succeed in higher education, and thrive in the workplace.
By fostering empathy and understanding among students, Texans Can Academies, through weekly Advisory lessons, aims to build a stronger, more connected school community, equipping students with the emotional intelligence needed to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
